Sunrise-2011-japan

Sunrise 2011 is a collaborative work of art that I created and am curating. In the wake of the Japanese earthquake, I invite everybody to participate in this artistic tribute to Japan by e-mailing a photo of the sun over their city to sunrise2011art@gmail.com. I am collecting suns from around the world and building one big global sun (see below). Superimposed onto the sun is my painting of Japan's Sun Goddess, Amaterasu 天照, the Mother of Japan. Sunrise 2011 is a tribute to international solidarity with Japan after the tragic earthquake, and to the enduring Japanese spirit. To learn more, please visit:

I always enjoy visiting a Roy's restaurant. There are over 30 Roy's around the world and the quality of the ones I've been to has been excellent.

Awhile back, I painted Chef Roy and have enjoyed his cuisine over the years. My Sumi-e portrait of Roy was commissioned by winemaker Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat to celebrate the 9th anniversary of Roy's. The label was featured on Jim's "Roy's Ninth Anniversary Celebration Pinot Noir."

If you are close to a Roy's restaurant I highly recommend his Misoyaki butterfish!

If you don't have John Hagel's books, run don't walk to your bookstore, or just go to Amazon.  He is a true internet and business strategy guru, advising many of the top companies in the Valley and beyond on how to leverage their informational assets and positioning.  And he has the cutest dog, Shu Shu!

Lorenzo Thione's first StartOut event for 2010 was a great success.  A diverse and opinionated panel of experts engaged in a lively and often humorous discussion on the topic "Investors and Entrepreneurs: A Match Made in Heaven...or Hell?" The speakers bravely tackled the intricacies of the most important - and unpredictable - relationships in any new business venture, those between founders and funders.  Panelists included: David Blumberg, Managing Partner of Blumberg Capital; Patrick Chung, Partner at New Enterprise Associates; James Williamson, angel investor; John Barnhill, serial entrepreneur; Lana Holmes, CEO of FarmsReach.  Moderated by Lorenzo (Founder of Powerset/Bing & co-founder of StartOut). Svetlozar and I particularly liked David Blumberg's comment that a good entrepreneur is like an artist, primarily driven by a need to externalize a vision.

The earthquake was unexpected today. So was Neenz Faleafine's post on TEDx Honolulu's site. Thanks Neenz! In response to Neenz's post, Master Chef Roy Yamaguchi twittered today about my portrait of him. Thanks for the tweet Roy! My Sumi-e portrait of Roy was commissioned by vintner Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat to celebrate the 9th anniversary of Roy's.  There was a party for hundreds of guests in Roy's honor and the image (see in gallery) was featured on Jim's "Roy's Ninth Anniversary Celebration Pinot Noir" as well as long-sleeved shirts.

Photos from my talk at TEDx Silicon Valley on Art as Social Bridge.  My painting of a soaring crane was the official image of the conference.  It was a visual reflection of the soaring of the human spirit through social entrepreneurship.   A giant limited edition print of 1 of the crane was printed.  Each speaker and all the team signed the print in a collaborative creative act.
